Upper-Class Families
THE CHRISTIANS
Duke James Christian/Rupert Friend Age: 51
Second son to the Duke of York, James' life was lavish and traditional. After the death of his brother Johannes, he went to Ashford to be with friends such as Lord Rigby and William Hayes. He found himself falling in love with his long time, distantly admired, family friend Lydia, and started a family. A few years later his father's untimely death caused James to quickly fill the shoes of a Duke. Like any mortal man, James struggled with his new position, jealousy, exchanges with the upper and lower class, loss, heartache and maturing into the man he is today. His life is full of many happy memories, such as hunting trips with the men, late nights at the piano while drinking and entertaining, as well of the birth of his four children. He now enjoys reminiscing the past with his aging friends while lounging in drawing rooms, attending balls, spending his time with his children and wife or traveling. He remains Duke of York, fulfilling his responsibilities while visiting his family in the city, hoping to one day pass on his wisdom and title to his oldest son, Henry. Since their extended stay in Upperton he has faced many losses of close friends including the Reeds and the Delecrants. He now is guardian to both of their daughters, Annalise Reed and Simone Delecrant until they wed. Duchess Lydia Jane Edith Christian/Elizabeth McGovern Age: 46
Youngest child of Richard and Edith Hayes, Duke and Duchess of Kent, Lydia lived in Ashford Estate all of her life, under the constant watch and care of her governesses and servants, but now older and married with family of her own she is free and in control of herself. Lydia is best known for her wit, elegance, charm, and beauty. It was Lydia's duty to marry rich and become well known for her elegance and rank which is why she chose James Christian, but it only helped that she fell in love with him. Together they had four darling children, Henry, Benjamin, Phillip and Astoria. |
James Henry Johannes Christian/Dan Stevens Age: 27
Henry Christian, oldest son of Duke James and Duchess Lydia, was always the most favourite of the Christian children. He is charismatic, outgoing, intelligent, strong, bold, and handsome as they come. Though the women may swoon, he knows that his responsibilities come first. That doesn't mean he hasn't had his eye on some of London's most eligible upper class ladies while attending various social functions with some of the richest in the country. Working closely with his father over the years, Henry will one day take his father's title with confidence. He hopes to make his family proud and live up to the Christian name. After conversations involving a particularly shady newcomer to Upperton, convincing him that he must turn from his going out every weekend to becoming something of a greater man, Henry flees in the middle of the night to join the army under a false name. His father, the duke, sent men to search, but as he had changed his name he remains part of her majesty's army while his family grieves his loss. When will Henry return to his duties or will his second brother, Benjamin, be forced to take up the title? Benjamin Viktor David Christian/James McAvoy Age: 24
Benjamin grew up as the middle of the Christian sons, quiet and sometimes shy, which led him to be the target of his two bold, outgoing brothers. He preferred books and the arts as opposed to killing for sport or loud boisterous evenings. This led him to grow closer to his sister Astoria and his ever caring mother. As the years went by Benjamin learnt how to hold his own against his brothers, using his wit and intelligence against them to win back the social playing field he had lost for so many years. With age and maturity. all of the Christian siblings love and support each other endelessly. His readings have taught him the truths about the world that his family has kept such poor conditions in factories that his family owns as well as the social injustices of the world between class. He secretly hopes to one day provide better working conditions and eradicate the separation, though he would never say such things in front of his upperclass family, especially his father. Phillip Christian/William Moseley Age: 22
Often called the spitting image of his father, Phillip has been James and Lydia's miracle child - nearly dying after being born, thus making him the always spoiled youngest boy. His outgoing personality led him to grow close to Henry, who always involved and taught him things growing up that Benjamin was too timid to partake in. Phillip hopes to one day find a place in this lavish world he knows so well, but for now is enjoying the splendor of expensive nights out in the city, social functions and the women he knows how to charm well. He enjoys having a good time, but knows he would never do anything to sully the Christian name. |
THE CHRISTIANS (2)
Viktor Klaus Wilhelm Christian/Paul Bettany Age: 43
Viktor had never grown up aspiring greatness. He was the son of the Duke of York, youngest of three brothers who always had their lives in order. He chose the flirtatious bachelor life, causing trouble, drinking until the sun rises, chasing women and having no regrets. After many years of this lifestyle, the passing of his oldest brother and father, Viktor was forced to succumb to adulthood and begin to live responsibly. This was not without fun, of course. After falling hopelessly in love with Verona while living at Ashford with his brother the Duke and his growing family, Viktor settled down and married. They tried for many years to have more than one child, but Viktor always claims it is payback for all the chasing he had done of women in his youth to be given one and only daughter to give him a run for his money. Viktor quickly got over any disappointment of not having sons to spoil and love his daughter endlessly and could not picture his family any other way. As fate would have it, his close relationships with Levi Reed left Viktor and his wife as Godparents to Edmund, who now resides with them after their parents' untimely death. He has always wanted a son, but knows his relationship with the boy will not be the easiest as he is nearly his own man. |
Verona Christian/Michelle Pfeiffer Age:40

Five years after her marriage, Verona's husband past from illness, making the young lady a widow and returning back to Ashford to get away from her pain for the husband she never loved, but respected. One thing had led to another and somehow Verona and Viktor finally found the right time for one another, leading to their much loving and passionate marriage and relationship. The two found happiness in their marriage, living on their days in a perfect home with their perfect daughter, the only child they would have that would survive. Being the youngest and only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Marietta grew up with her parents wrapped around her little finger. Growing up in such a prestigious family, marietta grew up with the finest tutors, gowns, and everything she could ever want, causing her to become quite spoiled and selfish at times. The Saint Johns
Theodore St John/Benedict Cumberbatch Age: 33
Raised in one of the highest esteemed families in England, Theodore was given the highest education, the best boarding schools, and the best tutors a man could buy. His skills in business, arts, trades, and politics helped him as he grew up to rule the docks, the St John name branded in cargo ships, importing and exporting. Such power and wealth, Theodore found himself invited to join the prestigious and very private group, Serpens. As most things in life, they were not as they seemed, and the truth of the brotherhood was revealed. The dark and criminal underbelly that ruled with threats, blackmail and death. Only those trusted few know the truth behind the curtain, sworn to secrecy out of fear of retaliation. Theodore had learned long ago that any who wished to resign were quickly reminded of how their lives are no longer their own. Being controlled was a bitter taste for a man such as Theodore, but as time passed he begrudgingly accepted his role, and raised in ranks to the inner circle. It came with a power that he had never asked for, but after five years he wore like a favored coat. In the public eye he has remained the traditional Lord, traditional ways valued above all. A traditional courtship, wedding, and wife found in Ivy Byrne had been all but expected. Both of his lives remain separate, but when the lines begin to cross how will theodore cope? |
Ivy St John Née Byrne/Alice Eve Age: 21
Ivy was raised with the finer things in life, like many of the others she knows. Being the youngest child and only daughter with three brothers, she grew up a bit spoiled. She is closest with her brother Julian, sharing his love of the arts and travel, but she would do anything for any of her family. Still, she felt at times like a decoration they keep about to brighten their home. Although she mingles easily among most of Upperton's young lords and ladies, sharing childhood with many of them, she is closest to Marietta Wellington. She knows the role she is to play, and expects others to know the rules as well. Lord Theodore Saint John allowed her to meet the expectation to make a good marriage, but also surprised her with love. Underneath the proper exterior she is capable of snark and wit. Ivy knows how to charm and generally gets whatever she wants. She is cunning, smart and can be sarcastic. Find yourself on the wrong side of her and you may quickly find the kitten has claws. Slowly discovering the twisted past of her husband, facing horrors of her own from murder to the loss of her child, will our virtuous lady keep her head on straight? Or does bad blood run in the Byrne line like her mother? |
The Byrnes
Earl Harrison Byrne/Colin Firth Age:
Eldest son of Warren Oliver Byrne and his wife Emma, Harrison never wanted for anything, but it didn't dull his fighting spirit. He stepped easily into the role of Earl of Stradbroke, glad that it gave him a voice in the House of Lords and carried less responsibility than a more weighty title. Charming and witty, he quickly wooed and married Catriona Carlisle during her first season. They were a social staple in those days, Harrison always basking in the glow of his golden-haired bride. He celebrated the birth of not one, but three sons and one daughter at her side. He was a role-model of the gentleman husband until his wife fell ill and slowly retreated from their lives. Since then, his tastes for the finer pleasures of life have increased, much to the displeasure of some of his children. Warren Carlisle Byrne/Rupert Penry-Jones Age: 30
Warren is the eldest of the Byrne children, a cool and collected individual with a sly smirk and clever mind. Being the eldest he was always treated more favourably, he never really rubbed it in to his siblings, he just took it in his stride, like with all things in life. Out of all his siblings he has the closest connection to Bert, but he would protect anyone close to him. Like any older brother he is very protective of his younger sister and is helping his father find the best match for her, likewise he is always on the lookout with finding his brothers suitable women. While he is looking out for others there is a looming responsibility to marry and father a son. Warren is a lover of politics and business. He gets want he wants, and if not...well, he always gets what he wants. |
Bertram Perry Byrne/Oliver Jackson-Cohen Age: 25
The second born son of Earl Harrison Bryne and his wife, Bertram is a charmer. Growing up with a lavish lifestyle always suited him, he likes to wine and dine, to look good and to woo the ladies. Being second born was a shame, and Bert thinks that the title should be his, while he gets on with his brother he is extremely jealous that he gets all. Though this feeling would be shaken if introduced to the right lady, who happens to have bags of money. Bert is a close friend and business partner of Tobias Remington. He is very serious in his business affairs, but outside of that he likes to have his fun. |
the paulets
Joseph William Avery/Paulet/Kit Harington Age: 23
Lord Joseph William Paulet, 15th Marquess of Winchester and second in line to the Duke of Bolton. Most in Upperton know the American Marquesses story by now. Joseph, the fourth son of Lady Laura Paulet, but the FIRST son sired by Lord John Octavian Paulet, 14th Marquess of Winchester. The Marquees grew up in North Carolina, the youngest of three half brothers and one half sister. Joseph’s true origins were only known to his mother and his real father, who was the older brother of Laura Paulet’s legitimate husband. Though, only two had an inkling of Joseph’s origins he still grew up as an outcast among his siblings. Where Joseph had dark hair, they had blonde. Growing up unwanted by his siblings Joseph found friends within the slave community that worked the cotton plantations his family owned. Joseph became quite fond of a slave by the name of Noah. Noah was even more of a brother to Joseph than those he shared blood with. Sadly, their friendship would end in the year 1861 as Joseph witnessed a bullet pierce the slaves heart. The trigger pulled by no other than Joseph’s oldest brother, the heir, Matthew Charles Paulet. The reason? Noah escaped and attempted to join the Union army, Matthew made sure to set an example. The oldest and youngest brother fought, but one accidental pull of a trigger, and Joseph won the fight. Blamed for the accidental death of Matthew, Joseph’s family would have had him killed if he had not ran away. So at fifteen years of age, Joseph enlisted as a soldier in the Union, taking his true brother, Noah, place under the false name Joseph Avery. As the war continued on years turning into month’s Joseph skills with the gun and survival had not gone unnoticed. He was lethal and very good at killing. So in the third year of the Civil war Joseph had moved his way up through the ranks becoming a Major General. But the war is in the past and the American, once major general, lives uncomfortably in England. The ex soldier struggled with the foreign rules and etiquette of England. Joseph still suffered from the side effects of war that left a growing hole in him. He didn’t feel like he had a place after learning his true origins. Who was he? The ex soldier attempted to leave England, but the unknown and growing affections for Lady Louisa Pittett had persuaded Joseph to stay and accept his title and fortune, granted to him by birth right. After a year spent in England, Joseph married the love of his life, Louisa Pittett. For once the sun seemed to shine more than before and Joseph could finally say that he felt safe. Safe, love, and accepted he finally had a home. The Marquess was a married man now, but revengeful souls still lingered in the shadows waiting for their moment….to strike. |
Louisa Paulet née Pittett/Jenna-Louise Coleman Age: 24
It had been said that Louisa would never marry the first man who gave her attention. Since her debut she had suitors, stirring enough attention to warrant proposals that were rejected, causing gossip to follow her every move. She was unbothered, for Louisa love was a dream, created to entice doe-eyed and naïve women into the first dons look they received. It was never to be her reality, knowing that she would only settle for a title that would reflect her spoilt upbringing. Until she met Joseph Paulett, the American Major, and Marquess of Winchester, who had quite literally come into her life like a storm. It was a stumbling and non-traditional courtship that followed, bending rules and giving Louisa a freedom (highly encouraged by Joseph) that let her guard down enough for a genuine emotion to blossom. Now married, Louisa looks to establish herself as the Marchioness of Winchester. But even with a heavy title it has done little to stop her socializing, frequently making appearances with Lady Mary Aldridge, and close friends with the recently wed Lord and Lady Cullen. Her loyalty just as fierce for her friends, she is quick to rise to the defense of any who have gained her trust. A family is the ultimate goal for any Lady of title, but for now Louisa enjoys the joy of being wed to the man she had never expected, but had always needed. |

Graham grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland with with father and step-mother and two siblings and one half-sibling. During the birth of Graham, his mother passed away which leads Graham to believe that makes him softer than most men in today’s age, especially with the title he has. With him being a little too empathetic or perhaps too brooding sometimes, he went to war when he was a teenager and fought so valiantly he earned the title of knight, he himself is modest of this and doesn’t believe that he deserved the title when he watched better men die for it, he only presents himself highly from it to honor the deaths of those who fought beside him. Graham is now unwillingly in Upperton on business where he is required to stay for the longest he’s ever stayed which is anything more than a weeks time, with his underlying racism for the English and his Scottish nationalist ways, he will not be attracted to most English women easily. Graham enjoys hunting, fishing, parliament meetings for education reform, society of the arts, and inventing objects in his spare time, when he can.

CLARA NOELLE CALTON NEE RIGBY/Maimie McCoy Age: 26.
Much like her father, Clara strives to learn all that she can, and read as many books as she can get her hands on. With her age, Clara's mother, Victoria Rigby, is worried she will never marry, but Clara insists she will find the right man when it is time. Clara, though a proper lady, knows she will only marry for love, instead of money or alliances like many in their circles. Clara hopes to one day travel the world and hopefully with a gentleman and see all that the world has to offer.

No matter where that good time leads him. When he goes to parties, he does ask Cassandra to go with him. And if something goes wrong he always makes her promise not to tell his da. Occasionally, Matthew has to help too. Patrick sometimes gets drunk at these parties and so sometimes has to spend the night at Cassie’s with no questions asked. DIARMID GALLAGHER/Brendan Gleeson Age: 63
Police Commissioner of Scotland Yard and also Lord of Ormond in Ireland. Resides in London with his eldest son, Patrick, 34. Diarmid’s childhood had been quite happy, and then when he was 10 and his brother, Ciaran, was 14, they emigrated to London with their parents. Once he was old enough, he stayed. Ciaran, however, returned to Ireland and found himself a girlfriend. Soon enough, he found himself a girlfriend, who would later become his wife and Patrick’s mother, Ellen. He was 29 when his son Patrick was born. Diarmid has duel citizenship because of his title. He calls himself the Lord of Tipperary, because it is more fun to do so. He never set out to be a police officer, the job just sort of landed in his lap. His rise up the ranks was as normal as you can get and he generally gets along with everyone. His real concern was mainly keeping his son out of trouble. As he gradually rose up the ranks to Commissioner, his boy was going through school. The higher he went, the more his boy was playing up slightly. Eventually, the rank of Commissioner was his. He was the boss now. His most promising officer is Matthew Davis, although most of the other colleagues get annoyed with him because they don’t understand how special he is. Diarmid is one of the few who does understand him. He is good at his job and will stop at nothing to get the job done properly. He hopes that one day, all of his colleagues and Matthew will get along and he will help them as much as possible. He is also hoping that his boy will learn to behave himself. |

Nora Richards/ Sophie Rundle Age: 20
Nora is the youngest daughter of Joseph and Maggie Richards, lifelong servants of the Christian family. Growing up she was well behaved and knew little outside the limits of her rank. She was employed as Astoria Christian's lady's maid, very skilled and loyal. At a mixed ball hosted at the Washington Hotel, she was helped by Benjamin Christian after having drinks spilt on her. The two bonded and began meeting up, he opened her eyes to the world and she would often attend secret talks and rallies with him late at night. This friendship blossomed into a little love affair which was ruined when the two were caught. Nora was dismissed from the household and from there she found work at the hotel until the pittett family took her on as a chaperone to Louisa. Outside of her work, Nora has great skill at drawing, something inherited from her deseased grandmother, and likes to be independent where she can. She wishes for a better and equal world. |
